An action plan to help Lake Davignon

concrete actions starting this spring!

The Town of Cowansville is announcing the development of an action plan that will improve the health of Lake Davignon. In this way the Town reaffirms its desire to act on the quality of the water, and this, in cooperation with the municipalities that make up the Lake Davignon watershed.

Present at the launch meeting on January 12 were representatives of Dunham, Cowansville, Brome Lake and Sutton, the Brome-Missisquoi MRC, the Comité de sauvegarde du bassin versant du lac Davignon (CSBVLD) and the Conseil de gestion du bassin versant de la Yamaska (COGEBY).

The Conseil de gestion du bassin versant de la Yamaska (COGEBY) has been given the mandate to draw up an action plan. This document will determine the actions to be implemented in order to slow the nutrient and sediment loads coming into the lake and which are, in part, the cause of the presence of blue-green algae. The action plan will also touch on other waterways that flow into the Town of Cowansville.

Cooperation will be at the heart of this action plan, which will bring to the same table the various officials concerned with the water of the Lake Davignon watershed. The Brome-Missisquoi MRC, the Comité de sauvegarde du bassin versant du lac Davignon (CSBVLD) and the majority of the seven municipalities that make up the watershed are already involved in the process.

The action plan should be presented in April, and actions on the ground should begin this spring. The defining of shoreline areas, the reparation of roadside ditches and the taking of tests to measure water quality are avenues that are already envisioned.

An action plan for the Yamaska watershed!

The COGEBY presents its master plan for water

The Conseil de gestion du bassin versant de la Yamaska (COGEBY) is announcing that the development of a master plan for water (Plan directeur de l’eau, or PDE) is now completed. All of the documents were sent to the Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement et des Parcs (MDDEP) just before the holidays. And COGEBY has received confirmation that the PDE is on the verge of being analyzed. In all, some 20 ministries and regional managements will evaluate and approve the document.

The PDE is a document that brings together the state of the watershed, the main problems, the objectives and the actions that will be taken. Totaling nearly 500 pages, the PDE of the Yamaska watershed has been greatly anticipated by various officials in the region.

The PDE can be consulted at the COGEBY Internet site.

Brome-Missisquoi youth in motion

Municipalities of Brome-Missisquoi collaborate to encourage a healthy lifestyle amongst youth

To encourage a healthy and an active lifestyle amongst youth between 0-17 years old, Brome-Missisquoi youth in motion was created. The program offers a variety of activities in the Brome-Missisquoi region including: cooking classes for kids, nutritional workshops for parents, motor skills workshop for children under 5, elementary afterschool sports programs as well drop-in gym sessions for teenagers.

The program was put in place thanks to the collaboration of representatives from schools, daycares, non-profit organisation, municipalities, and community workers within the MRC region. Together, the municipalities of Cowansville, Farnham, Lac-Brome, and Sutton joined forces to plan a variety of activities that not only answer the specific needs of youth, but also take advantage of equipment and infrastructures already available in these communities. The municipalities of Bedford and Bromont will be joining the group in the near future.

The 2009-2010 calendar offers activities for each of the MRC poles. Information can be found in the "Interesting news" section on the MRC website . It contains a complete list of activities per municipality as well as the name and coordinates of representative from each town.

The Brome-Missisquoi youth in motion project is financed by the “Québec en Forme” program.
