Biodegradable polyethylene bags available

Thanks to BROME ECO, a local business

BROME ECO, a young Brome-Missisquoi business, is concerned with its environment and its ecological challenges. It is aware that it has become vitally important to actively work towards making our planet greener and cleaner to live on. That’s why over the course of 2008 BROME ECO decided to develop its production and start marketing its biodegradable polyethylene bags, made entirely in Quebec.

Brome-Eco specializes in the packaging and distribution of biodegradable garbage bags. The Génération [e] bags replace conventional, non-biodegradable bags. Génération [e] bags are available in several sizes: kitchen bags (3 sizes), outdoor garbage bags, leaf bags and also industrial-size bags. To date the company serves about 60 regional clients (IGA, METRO, RONA, Canadian Tire, convenience stores, health and environmental stores). As well the business is proud of the partnership it established with the town of Cowansville, which has approved and authorized the collection of green waste and dead leaves using its bags.

BROME ECO’s Génération [e] bags are manufactured from polyethylene treated with a special additive using recycled materials and are 100 % biodegradable and recyclable. The bags can take between nine months and five years to decompose in any landfill site or elsewhere depending on the soil conditions. The process is faster than that of ordinary bags, which, according to estimates, can take up to 300 years to break down.

To date there is no other product that allows for the degradation of plastic without the presence of light or photosensitivity in one form or another. However tests have shown that this plastic, once broken down, leaves no toxic or dangerous residue for organisms living in the earth or water.

So far the business has created three full time jobs. BROME ECO is now looking at taking on national markets. To learn more about this young business and its products, visit its Internet site at :

The business and its owner, Carl Chaussé, benefit from technical support from the Brome-Missisquoi CLD, from a loan from the Fonds local d’investissement (FLI, or local investment fund) and a grant within the framework of the Fonds Jeunes Promoteurs (young promoters fund).
