“Down by the Bay”

400 Years of the Use and Abuse of Missisquoi Bay

In 1609 Samuel de Champlain came down the Richelieu River and into Lake Champlain to claim the region for France. This year marks the 400th Anniversary of his visit to this region and it marks the 400th Anniversary of recorded activity at Missisquoi Bay

The 2009 exhibit “Down by the Bay” at the Missisquoi Museum looks at the uses and abuses of Missisquoi Bay over the past 400 years and the rich history that can be found along its shoreline. The Missisquoi Museum will partner with “La Corporation Bassin Versant Baie Missisquoi” to present the museum’s collection of early 19th Century objects from the community living by Missisquoi Bay as well as the current environmental issues facing this region.

The exhibition also highlights United Empire Loyalist objects, community life in the 19th century, personal and household items from Missisquoi families and Hodge’s General Store, which features dry goods from the 1940s.

Located just off Route 202 along the Route des Vins, between Dunham and Bedford in the picturesque village of Stanbridge East this jewel in the Eastern Townships. Situated at 2 River Street in Stanbridge East, the Missisquoi Museum is open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m, every day, May 31st to October 11th 2009.

CAVALIA Creation and Training Center in Sutton

Canadian Government contributes 4 M$

Economic Development Canada affords a 4 M$ reimbursable grants to CAVALIA for the creation of an all-new show. The funds will serve, among other purposes, to install its Creation and Training Center in Sutton.

Riding on an immense success and an enviable popularity following its first show, the great adventure of CAVALIA, founded in 2003, continues with the process of creating a second show which will premiere in 2011. Its preparation will require the development of installations in Sutton, a space entirely devoted to creation and the training of two and four-legged artists.

CAVALIA is an original orchestration of equestrian, stage and multimedia arts and a show like no other. It continues to register record crowds in Montreal and has fascinated almost 700,000 spectators during its different tours in Québec.

The show currently presented in Montreal under the giant white big top (junction of Metropolitan and Décarie autoroutes) will continue until the end of June. The tickets and the schedule are available at 866 999-8111 or www.cavalia.net. The tour will then travel to Chicago in the USA.

The Brome-Missisquoi CLD is delighted by the news because such a major investment in the region will serve as a lever to favor the injection of additional sums, not only in Sutton but also all over the MRC territory.

Music in the workplace

Value, accessibility and commodity

The best way to evaluate the contribution of music to an enterprise is to imagine a business without it. Customers consider music as being part of a business’ trademark – as important as the decor.

It is compulsory to obtain a license for the public performance of music under author rights in an enterprise so that music creators and editors are paid for the use and public communication of their music. The Société canadienne des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique (SOCAN) insures that this is done by granting licenses to people and businesses that publicly broadcast that music.

SOCAN gives access to nearly the worldwide music repertoire that is protected by author’s rights paid for under a licensing fees, at a rate determined by the Commission du droit d’auteur du Canada.

There are over 24 different SOCAN fees, depending on the use which is made of the music The most common :
· Fee 3A Live performance
· Fee 3C Adult leisure clubs
· Fee 4A Popular Concerts
· Fee 6 Cinemas
· Fee 8 Receptions, symposiums, meetings and fashion shows
· Fee 15A Background music
· Fee 15B Call waiting
· Fee 18 Registered music
intended for dancing
· Fee 19 Physical exercises and dance courses
· Fee 20 Karaoke
